Making It In Textiles 2019

The Making It In Textiles conference is an annual event based in Bradford for chosen third year construct students. The event takes place over two days and consists of talks from industry professionals such as Humphries Weaving, Margo Selby and Wallace & Sewell.  The evening meal was the perfect opportunity to network with professionals and meet other students, the connections I made at this event have helped me in my finding possible career paths. The final day consists of industry visits to various weaving mills and finishers; it was fascinating to see how the cloths are made, and especially to learn about the job roles within the manufacturing industry. I was grateful to have been chosen to attend MIIT 2019, it was eye opening, inspiring and has encouraged me to gain more knowledge and experience within the field.

David Nieper Competition 2019

IMG_5592.JPG

As part of my second year project, I designed a collection of woven fabrics suitable for the David Nieper client. This lady would be between the ages of 50 - 100, she would shop at luxury expensive boutiques and would look to individuals such as Mary Berry and Joanna Lumley for fashion inspiration.  The company requested four fabrics for: evening wear, day wear, night wear and travel wear, and wanted the designs to be fashion forward and new. My initial thoughts for this brief was to create a subtly bright collection including hints of neon on a predominantly white palette. It occurred to me that the elderly lady shouldn't have to wear dull colours and patterns, after collecting primary research that supported my thoughts, I went forward with the idea. I was chosen as a finalist for the competition, and was given the fantastic opportunity of visiting the David Nieper company,  it was interesting to see a fashion business at work, especially as all processes in David Nieper are made on the site.

The Bradford Textile Competition is an annual competition ran by the Bradford Textile Society.  There are many categories to choose from including, knit, weave, embroidery and rug/carpet design. I have entered the competition for two years.  Board one was part of my florals project, designing luxury woven fabrics and trimming for 'Trimmings by Design'. Board two was entered for fashion, these fabrics were inspired by the artist Haroon Mirza and were designed with the brief of David Nieper in mind.

Bradford Textile Society Competition 2018

In my first year of study, only selected students could enter the competition. Myself and two others were chosen, I decided to enter my knit project inspired by Howard Hodgkin, and weave project inspired by the kitchen.
